Mohegan Bluffs is one of the first places many visitors think of when they picture Block Island.

The tall clay cliffs rise more than 200 feet above the Atlantic, with views stretching far out over the ocean. It’s simply one of the must-see attractions on Block Island.

Come for the stunning natural landscape, the photos, or simply to see one of the island’s most recognizable landmarks.

Getting Here

Mohegan Bluffs is on the southern end of Block Island, along Spring Street. If you’re coming from Old Harbor, follow Spring Street south toward the Southeast Lighthouse.

You can get to Mohegan Bluffs by car, taxi, moped, bike or a 2-mile walk from town. It’s about 2.5 miles from Old Harbor, so roughly a 10-minute ride by car, or a 15-20 minute bike ride. If you bike, keep in mind that the approach to the Bluffs has some uphill terrain. Arriving at the Bluffs and Taking in the View

Mohegan Bluffs has a free gravel parking lot just past the Lighthouse at the Edward S. Payne Overlook. Bike racks are also available, so you can lock up your bike after your ride over.

At the overlook, you’ll get your first full view of the bluffs and the staircase leading down to the beach. You can get a great sense of just how high the cliffs are. On a clear day, you might even be able to see Montauk. The top of the overlook is also a convenient spot to take photos without undertaking the full descent.

Descending the Famous Bluff Stairs

Speaking of descent, the Mohegan Bluffs staircase has 141 steps and is considered very steep. The stairs wind down the bluff, with views of the cliffs and ocean along the way.

Reaching the beach requires navigating the Block Island Bluffs stairs and a short climb over rocks at the end. The route is not suitable for visitors with limited mobility. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain.

The climb back up can be more tiring than the descent. Make sure you’re prepared for climbing back up. Bring enough water, use the handrails, and take breaks as needed.

Be sure to check the posted signs for current access information. Erosion has changed the conditions over time, so visitors should stay within marked areas and respect any closures.

Exploring Mohegan Bluffs Beach Below

The beach at the bottom of the bluffs has a rugged, natural feel. The shoreline is rockier, and the towering cliffs create a dramatic backdrop.

With the sound of crashing waves and wide-open views of the Atlantic, the atmosphere feels wild and remote.

Making the Most of Your Time at Mohegan Bluffs

There are plenty of things to do at the Mohegan Bluffs, so give yourself some time to enjoy before climbing back up.

The cliffs stretch for almost three miles along the coast, so there are plenty of photo opportunities as you walk along the beach. If you continue toward Vaill Beach, you can turn around for a different perspective, including the Southeast Lighthouse perched above the cliffs.

If you have the time, bring a picnic lunch and settle in for a while. You can also swim, but the surf can be quite strong, so use caution. Mohegan Bluffs beach doesn’t have restrooms or lifeguards, so plan ahead and bring everything you need.

What to See Nearby Before You Go

Once you’ve finished exploring the Bluffs, there are several other things to see in the area. The Southeast Lighthouse, a historic lighthouse built in 1873, is right next to Mohegan Bluffs. You can also visit Rodman’s Hollow, a protected natural area with scenic walking trails.
