Having just celebrated World Tourism Day on September 27th, Block Island is proud to be one of the 100 sponsors of Destination Think's Sustainable Travel Initiative, a global effort to redefine tourism by prioritizing sustainability, community, and the environment. As the world becomes more conscious of the impact of travel on local ecosystems, Destination Think has emerged as a leader in helping destinations adopt eco-friendly practices promoting responsible and sustainable tourism.

Block Island, with its natural beauty and commitment to conservation, is a fitting partner in this movement dedicated to preserving its unique charm for future generations. This partnership not only highlights Block Island’s ongoing efforts but also strengthens its position as a model for small destinations seeking to balance tourism and environmental protection.

Known for its pristine beaches, protected wildlife habitats, and eco-friendly tourism options, the island is a perfect example of how small destinations can lead by example in sustainability. With its compact size and scenic landscapes, Block Island encourages car-free exploration through biking and walking. Visitors can easily access endless trails, beaches, and the charming town right after stepping off the ferry.

Next time you visit, consider being more mindful of your environmental footprint by opting to bike or walk rather than drive, supporting local businesses that prioritize sustainability, and avoiding single-use plastics. Fun fact! There is a ban of single-use plastic bags, as well as balloons on Block Island. Looking to fill your water bottle up? You will find water refill stations on the island at The Solviken Preserve, The Island Free Library, or on the lawn of the Harbor Church. These small actions like bringing a reusable water bottle or participating in beach cleanups can make a big difference in keeping Block Island pristine for everyone to enjoy.

The Block Island Tourism Council has created a fun video to guide you through "How To Love Block Island" - including tips and tricks to remind everybody how to enjoy and respect the island simultaneously.
