We have been providing architectural design services to clients on Block Island for over 25 years. Our innovative and environmentally sensitive architect-designed solutions blend traditional historic vernacular forms with contemporary interpretation, resulting in timeless architectural achievements. Block Island work includes new and remodeled residences and accessory structures, and historic preservation services to both residential and commercial Island landmarks.
The adjacent photo is of a recently completed 1,100 SF addition (on the right) to an earlier non-weatherized Island cottage (on the left). The work also included a new kitchen in the old cottage and a Second-Floor glass-walled Master Bathroom dormer that looks out to the sea. The ‘two-in-one’ design allows the Owners to close off the unheated early cottage and use the ‘new’ weatherized wing in the Winter, and the entire home in the Spring, Summer, and Fall months. Within the 2,200 SF structure are two Living Areas, the Kitchen/Dining Area, Kitchenette, and four Bedrooms/3 Baths.
As part of the community, Doug was on the Historic District Commission for 10 years, and served as a member of the Old Harbor Task Force. He is also an active member of St. Ann’s By-the-Sea.
Elsewhere, a number of our historic preservation/conservation/rehabilitation projects have received State and Local awards, and publication in National and State magazines and journals. Projects to date have extended from New England through the Mid-Atlantic, and into West Virginia. Visit our website (www.GilpinArchitect.com) for more information.
