If you’re into clamming, or just a pleasant stroll, this is your spot. It’s a large crescent of sandy beach on the pond side, protected from the wind and with no waves, so it’s good for little kids. Besides clamming (make sure you get a clamming license from the Harbormaster shack first,) it’s a great place to find horseshoe crabs, hermit crabs and egrets – so much so, it’s the location chosen by the Nature Conservancy for their kid-oriented Marsh Mucking walks. It’s also a good spot to launch a kayak into Great Salt Pond. Andy’s Way is not particularly well marked – it’s a dirt road marked by a small white street sign on the left side of a hairpin curve, about three miles up Corn Neck Road. Go to the end of the dirt road (sorry, no mopeds) and you’re ready to go. Beane Point, a US Fish and Wildlife property that is home to many rare birds is just north of here, and is worth a visit if birding or photography is your passion. Over 70 species of migratory songbirds visit Block Island each fall.
