If you’re into music – and we mean two stages, 6 days and 48 acts worth of music – there’s no place like The Block Island Music Festival. And the best part is – it’s free. Even the food. No kidding.
Now in its 19th year, The Block Island Music Festival brings the best up-and-coming original acts from all over the Northeast to Captain Nick's on Block Island starting June 11th. Running from Tuesday through Sunday, the festival features eight acts per day -- the first four acts taking place on the outdoor "Sunshine Stage" beginning at 5 pm (kids are welcome with strict parental supervision); the final four playing the Main Stage indoors, where the amps get cranked from 9 pm to 1 am (21+ only with proper ID required).
The whole week has a special grassroots vibe. The festival plays all types of music, creating a truly unique and exciting musical atmosphere. As the barbeque sizzles (amazingly, food is free until supplies run out for the day) and the blender churns out frozen drinks (not free, but really good), the audience slips easily into the mellow island atmosphere where flip flops and bikini tops constitute proper attire.
A word to the wise: you’ll want to stay over, and camping isn’t allowed on Block Island, so make hotel arrangements before you arrive – especially for the popular weekend dates.
