One of the things many folks love about Block Island (in addition to the fabulous beaches, boating, fishing and scenery!) is the way the simpler pleasures of summers past are still celebrated. Case in point: the annual American Legion Family Picnic, held each year on a Sunday afternoon in late July.
It’s old-time Americana at its best, with All-American fare like hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, corn, baked beans and more. The price is old-time, too. Just $10 for adults in advance (tickets will be sold at Farmer’s Markets and in front of BI Grocery,) and $12 at the door. Just $5 for ages 7-12 and free for children under 7— and that’s for all you can eat! The picnic starts at noon at the Legion’s Park location, so get there early while there’s still plenty of chow.
The American Legion is a veterans’ organization with the mission to serve veterans, military personnel and the communities where their posts are located. It’s nice to know that chowing down on picnic fare is helping a worthwhile organization and the people they serve.
